Legitimate software installs?

by dennis.billstrom . Updated 23 years, 10 months ago

A while back I posed this question – this generated much debate about giving Admin rights to Win2000 users… this is a no win situation.

The question I should have asked is – As the Network Admin how do I upgrade and install applications to users machines who do not have admin rights (but are looging in as the Non-Admin user). For instance I want to upgrade or deploy IE6 to 600 machines.

So far I’ve tested many solutions – none has worked completly so far.

I use Novell’s ZENworks Network App Launcher (NAL) to install some apps – but if the app requires a reboot and completes the install – NAL does not work.

I looked at Local group Policies (no Active Directory) I tested the “Always install with elevated privleges” that didn’t work either. IE6 install still wanted more permission. Beside if it did work it pose a problem to edit policies for 600 machines.

I’m now looking at using the Run As command in junction with the NT login Script and batch files.
Any suggestions using the Run As Command?

Some might suggest SMS but that’s not a option at this time.

I’m also testing Microsoft’s Software Update Services (SUS)- but that only deployes security updates – not applications.

I know there may be 3rd party solutions – but I would like to avoid these if possible.

Any help would be much appreciated.
