Linux vs.Windows – Gaming for the future

by tw|st . Updated 25 years, 9 months ago

We are at an interesting point in the evolution of PCs. With SGI, Nvidia, and VA Linux bringing true OpenGL to Linux, and many gaming companies starting to look toward Linux/Unix as a game-able platform ( examples: Quake 1,2,3 ; Crusaders of Might & Magic; Heretic II; Etc.), it’s now possible that Microsoft can have competition in this arena as well. As any PC gaming enthusiast knows, PCs have the some of the greatest games on the planet. There is no comparing a high res monitor to a TV. So, what’s next? If MS is due to be broken up in the near future, what will happen to the PC gaming market ( which as most followers of it know, is worth many billions per year, rivaling the motion picture industry)? I believe its time for multi-platform development within the PC community. In the last year, Apple has attracted quite a few gaming companies to their platform, and given time, I’m sure will do well. I believe it time that the same happens with the Linux platform. Over the past 2years, I’ve watched linux grown into a very user friendly OS thru the development of KDE & Gnome, making the available desktops as easy to use as Windows. Lets take this a step further now, and garner the support of the gaming industry. If nothingelse, it’s sure to give MS a needed kick in the kiester, showing them that they either need to shape up, or ship out.
