Mac Pages conversion to Word and formatting

Formatting is corrupted when I convert a Mac/Pages document to Word. This happens both directions. A PDF is not a good substitute. Anyone have ideas on how to work around this?

Also, the Word converted doc in Pages crashes Pages constantly (15 crashes in 100 pages). The fonts issue is fixed so I am at a loss. This doesn’t happen with a virgin Pages document.
