Macbook Air screen brightness auto adjustment not working

I am pretty sure that my Macbook Air (mid 2012) adjusted screen brightness depending on the ambient light. It must have done it by sensing it through the camera or a sensor nearby. However, that no longer works now. Anybody got any ideas?
