I just thought I would canvass the opinions of all of you regarding the situation that arises when you have a company data server for all the documents and spreadsheets and stuff, then one of the managers decides to get a notebook and load a whole heap of that data on to his notebook “for reference”.
You know damn well that he will not be able to restrain himself, and will ultimately make changes to a document – or 2 – in the field, and he will also create new documents on the notebook in the field.
No problems so far, in that standard sychronisation software can update his changes into the company data, and the other way around, but the one I am very curious about is what do we do to cover the possibility that the same file is changed both on the company server and on the manager’s notebook during the same period.
What techniques are out there to stop the modification of the same file in two different places prior to the next synchronisation. I can’t really think of a satisfactory solution apart from assigning a certain part of the data to the manager’s machine and removing access to it on the company server, but that has it’s own share of difficulties.
What do you blokes do in that situation.
