might get fired

Before I get to my point, here is some advice. Never, EVER take a job with a company that deals in any aspect of manufacturing. I don’t have the time to go into it all, but trust me, it will be the most miserable place you have worked.

Here is my problem.

I am loosing it at work. I have worked at this company for almost ten years. I have outlasted most of my peers. The turn around at this company is criminal. Our company has around 1,500 employees.

Our new IT director has been here a couple of years, and for the most part we get along really well, but I make a point to not develop any personal relationship with the guy.

He has a drinking problem, and sometimes that spills over into work. He has some very questionable ethics which the company is discorvering. Every other person loathes the guys so anyone I talk to already has a sour attitude towards anyone from the IT department. So many negative issues are going on around here that I don’t have enough room in this text box to describe them, but I am going to have to point out this latest.

Well in an attempt to maintain control he has mandated that NOTHING be done without a helpdesk he has approved. His exact words: “Anyone who works another helpdesk without my approval will be fired on the spot!”

Well you can imagine how well this went over with the rest of the company. Our helpdesk system works by a user submitting it to his supervisor for approval. Once the supervisor approves it, then it finally goes to my boss where he may or may not approve it. This process can take an entire day.

Today I got fed up with it. A supervisor called and one of his shop guys forgot his password and needed it to be reset. This take about 30 seconds to do. So I did it and the guy said he was going to put in a helpdesk for it. These are simple problems we used to just handle because they took so little time.

Well my boss found out, and is on the rampage. It has not gotten back to me directly yet, but I am about ready to call his bluff. I am pretty well liked with most people here, including the president.

Here is my question. I know I can “legally” be fired because it is whatever the company wants. I do feel that I should try and fight it, if it really comes to this. Basically I would be forcing the company to either take my side or the side of the IT director.

Any advice on what I should do if anything comes of this? Do I have any leg to stand on?
