Missing Excel File

An excel file seems to have disappeared from the folder that it was saved too. I checked to make sure it wasn’t hidden and ran a search for it, but nothing. When a the user re-created the file and tried to save it he was told that the file already existed in the folder. Why would the file technically be there but not be displayed or show up in a search? Any thoughts?
