My software cannot find wireless network for upgrading

Dear all:

I am using a wireless connection with my laptop (windows XP). It seems that the connection is great and I can access internet through Firefox or IE. However, whenever I try to do the update of my softwares, such as symantec liveupdate, the software cannot find my wireless connection. When I turn to internet options in control panel, I don’t see any option to configure a wireless connection. Any idea what the problem is? (I have not used any firewall besides windows firewall)
