Mysterious underlining in Word

We are running Windows 95 on a Novell Network 4.11. In Word 97 we have had several occurances of documents being underlined (yes the entire document), however this does not show on the screen or in print preview. We have tried opening the documentfrom Exploring to renaming. Nothing seems to help.
