Native SATA drivers?

by hbartlet . Updated 21 years, 8 months ago

My m/b, ASUS P5GD1 w/ Intel 915P chipset & 3 disk controllers: 1. UDMA IDE controller, supports 1 master/slave drive; 2. ITE8212 IDE RAID controller, supports 2 master/slave drives as standard IDE or RAID; 3. ICH6R 82801 SATA RAID controller, supports 4 SATA drives as standard IDE (82801F), RAID (82801R, Intel Matrix Storage Technology) or AHCI (Advanced Host Control Interface, ie. native SATA). Thus the m/b supports 6 IDE & 4 SATA drives. The controllers can be set to standard IDE, RAID or AHCI via the BIOS. All controllers default to standard IDE so the O/S could see up to 10 IDE drives.

I only have a SATA drive & left the controllers set at default standard IDE mode when I installed Windows 2000 SP4.

When I change the BIOS setting for the SATA 82801 controller to native SATA (AHCI, 82801R) W2K boots normally until it goes to graphics mode, then BSOD: boot device missing. This happens because the 82801R RAID controller driver is missing.

Using the Add New Hardware wizard I tried to install the 82801R RAID drivers while the controller was set to standard IDE mode (82801F). I selected the SCSI/RAID device, then clicked Have Disk on the Vendor/Device dialog, then Browse & navigated to the folder w/ the drivers, then OK. I then got an empty dialog window instead of a list of the drivers available in the folder. When I ran the program supplied to install the drivers it terminated: controller (82801R) not present. This is a catch-22 as I need to have installed the drivers in order to boot in AHCI mode but apparently I cannot install the drivers unless I am already in that mode. Had I installed W2K w/ the controller in AHCI mode I would have had to press F6 & supply the drivers diskette, which I created, during the install.

Now I need a means to get the drivers to install when the SATA controller is in standard IDE mode (82801F) or to load the drivers during boot when in SATA RAID mode (82801R) so I don’t have to re-install from scratch. Any suggestions?
