I know how to adjust the group policies for these in XP-Pro but there is no policy editor in Home
yay!, good one MS, the home user is supposed to know how to edit the registry ?!? WT#

here’s the story,
I usually avoid XP Home like the plague,
but I’m doing a favor for a friend:
a> his system has barely any hours logged (less than 2100 POH)
b> his HDD fried because of a bad bump
so
– I ordered a new extra large 320GB HDD
(OEM installed a 60GB)
– I also ordered 2GB RAM
(OEM installed 512MB)
– for a total of around $240.00
(it’s a nearly brand new system again)
– downloaded all the drivers for the unit
– did a fresh install of XP SP3
– installed the drivers
– started win update in “Download & notify” mode, and got a list of 85 updates
the, “install updates and shut down”
is a Royal PITA,
but I can’t seem to find anything to point me to the right key to modify or add to prevent this from popping up
(my googling skils aren’t the greatest)
it’s been my experience that more updates fail to install or can / will hose a system when more than one is installed,
I’d say a good percentage of complaints about win updates hosing a system has to do with bulk application of updates
since the policy was implemented here
– install all updates individually
we haven’t been bit by the:
“an update just hosed a system”
or
“an update or group of updates shows as failed on the win updates site”
I’ve seen on many occasion when checking the win updates site a bunch of the little red (X) notifications for failed updates
where updates were applied in bulk to Win2K and XP systems
but have yet to see the update(s) failed notification on a system where updates are applied individually
with all that info
that’s why I need to know where the keys are so I can export one or both from a pro machine
