network with cable modem

What is the best way to set up a home network using cable modem as your access to the internet? Specificly what hardware is needed. Do I connect using a simple hub or something like a switch. Also because of its always on capibility I am thinking ofsome type of firewall is good for my protection? Thanks for any help provided. Pasha
