new file and print server

I just installed a new server on the network that will take over for our current file and print server that is aging and dying. I can recreate the shared directory structure, permissions, and network printers easily enough. My question is how can I see what users currently have for mapped drives and network printers without physically going to each pc while the user is logged on. The only way I know of is Dameware, but the IT Director forbids me to install it. We use Active Directory so I could use login scripts however I would like to keep the end users unaware that anything is going on.
