New Virus??? HELP!

I turned on my computer and it went to check disk because of a dirty volume. It started replacing thousands of security files with a default security file. After it ran, IE will not open, most programs will not open, wireless says “no supported wireless adapters in the system” yet it will go online with Firefox only.
This is Windows XP on a Dell Precision M90. I have one other laptop that is acting this way. Both are currently kept off the network. No viruses are found with a scan (Trend Micro) in safe mode. I have Vista on a different partition on this machine and it runs fine, but will try to run the check disk at startup on the XP partition. I can ESC this in Vista but it would not allow me to ESC in XP Any clues?????
