No WEB Pages in I.E.

I’m running a windows xp home machine with sp2 installed. I can ping any server but Internet explorer will not open any web page. I put in the ip address of a site and it still won’t open. Checked for spyware/adware/viri, nil or removed. Released IP, flushed dns, renewed IP, still nothing. Thanks for any help.
