Non Genuine Copy of windows xp

Had this error on the startup screen.
Run the repair function from the xp pro disk sp1. It booted perfect, then I installed sp2 and hotfixes then the system crashed on me! How do I resolve this problem without formatting the harddrive? Is this a possible virus? E-mail me at vanniekerkha@gmail.com with answers please!
