Ocr Recognition

Recently i have tried to scan some application forms into word with the intention of opening in word and being able to type directly into the document..i have found some free ocr editing programs that do this quite well, however the ocr software seems to struggle to recognise the place-holders (answer boxes)in the document..any ideas on which is the best ocr software..scanner is a lexmark x1270..even if it costs me..?
