Operating system not found

I had this error msg. appear after the machine booted up “operating system not found”. I’ve tried reloading the OS onto the machine and it appears to be successful until I reboot than I get the very same message. Any ideas? The OS is WIN2K btw. I ran a generic disk utility that said the HD is ok, but I’m not convinced.
