os doesnt see sata 250g when installing

Install xp pro on to 64bit mb with amd cpu.
xp with no sp’s.It goes thru the initial setup but when it asks if i want to install windows ,i hit enter and it says cannot find hd.Is it because of the size or because there are no service packs,or is the hd bad? please help.
Ive already formatted the hd with segate software.
