Patch Panel Configuration

I have just installed a new patch panel. I have plugged an RJ45 cable into the Hub and to the patch panel and I am not getting a link light on the Hub.

I don’t have a tester to scan the wiring, do I use a straight wire connection or a crossover connection? Should I get a link light on the Hub if I don’t have anything plugged into the port on the wall?

Please advice.
