PC won’t restart,XP Home SP2

Selected safe mode, last known good config, etc but with any option booting up gets so far in loading drivers and then hangs. Tried booting from XP Home Start up disks and system reports pci.sys is corrupt. I don’t want to use Quick Restore CDs as I haven’t backed up data files. Any suggestions?
