Peer to peer without a hub

I’m trying to set up a small network at home between 2 computers. I do not have a hub but I do have a cat 5 cable with the crossover. I use netbeui and have the proper configurations, I think. But they cannot see each other. Is there something special I should be doing for this configuration.
