Printer friendly HTML pages

Is there a way to code an HTML page so that it can be printer friendly? What I mean is that mainly the information on the page can be printed without the site’s navigation bars, banner ads, etc… from appearing on the printout or am I stuck creating one document for the web and another for printing (i.e. Word or PDFs)?
