Printer spooler subsystem app error, how do i fix?

First, I am using windows xp pro. I am receiving a “printer spooler subsystem app error” when I try to print a pdf(actually send it to the printer, not create), or when I am in quickbooks and trying to print to create a pdf. I have tried finding/deleting the shockwave files in the folder c:\windows\system32\spool\printers but I am unable to see any files there(i have looked for hidden files/folders). I am using a dell printer, but this has been going on since before I even had this printer. I am assuming this means my drivers for the printer are ok because the error was there before I had this printer. Any help????
