Problem using Win 98 Device manager

I have accidentally removed/lost the “Monitors” and “Display adapters” entries and branches in “Device Manager”. I have tried to reload Windows 98 with the hope that that will bring the entries back but that does not work. I don’t believe I am completing the reload because the screen goes blank. A start up in “safe mode” keeps the display running but doesn’t seem to buy anything.
