I have a question is in reference to a Win98 PC on a LAN. Recently, it is completely unable to communicate with the other computers in the LAN.
I say “almost” because it does succeed in getting an IP from the DHCP server at startup. Otherwise, I cannot ping any other machines or use network apps. BTW, ping localhost does work, and I’ve tried using a different NIC (same result), using a known good & available static IP
(same result), and using a different computer (this DOES work fine). So my guess is the problem is on the software side.
I think the problem started when I once removed TCP/IP from the Network Control Panel and then added it back again. Being without the Win98 CD on hand and thinking I might have the CAB files onthe hard drive, I pointed Control Panel to C:\windows or c:\windows\system to try to find the needed files, and it proceeded to copy the existing files onto themselves, I think.
After the network problem appeared, I reinstalled Win98 over the existing installation, with no resulting improvement.
Can anyone offer any insight into this problem or any ideas of what else I can try?
Thank you.
