programming languages

I need to start programming & I don’t know what language would be best for beginners.
Eventually I might need several development
language skills, but right now the important
issue is learning the basics.
Any insight into the best language to cover
the basic principles, then which languages are better suited to various types of applications would be sincerely appreciated.
