PYE DVD-RW VHS Recorder Disc Record Errors

VHS records fine. Cannot do dubbing or record to DVD discs using the recommended discs. The unit functions correctly except recording. The disc reads, shows space but fails on record to an error. I disassemble the DVD-RW drive and cleaned the laser lens but it did not correct the problem. No apparent burned diodes, etc. I get these errors for different discs; Cannot record on this disc, E454040990 or E454037380. I am guessing that the laser optical lens is defective. I thought of replacing the DVD-RW drive unit with a brand new drive.
