Re-joining Servers to a domain

I was re-joining a server to a domain today to take care of some name resolution problems, and was asked by my boss “by doing that, what exactally does that do and why do things start working again?” So my question is what does re-joining a server to a domain actually do? What is going on and why does it work again?
