record searches

Greetings! I have worked extensively with the OpenVMS operating system, and I use my PC exclusively now. VMS has some really neat utilitys – called the sort/merge – search etc where it can search all the files for a particular record and then place only the wanted records in a n output file (that is the search) and the sort/merge is an incredible utility that appears to have no PC equivalent – if anyone is familiar with what I’m talking about and knows how to rig a PC to do what VMS does, please let me know.
