Reinstalled Windows – Updated – Black Screen @ Login

As a new question. I recently tried to wipe my drive (after backing up!) and the computer booted up wonderfully…

Until I did a windows update and restarted it… and it gave me the black screen at the login just as it did before. Now, I am definitely blaming Windows 7. Does anyone know if this is a common occurrance?
