removing an old version of Palm Desktop

I uninstalled my Clie PEG-SJ22 and tried to install an update I downloaded from www.palm.com/support and I got an error message “Cant remove an older version…”. I tried to clean every bit on my hard diak and registry and still could not install the update version. What can I do short of re-formatting my hard disk?
