RMI or Sockets

Hi There,
currently i am developing a client/server application (is a stand alone client app. not through browser..suppose to be 2-tier but i am not sure). I am looking forward to learn a distribution programming skill, is socket programming easier or RMI easier ? or RMI is subset of socket ?
