search engines wont work

No search engines will work on my computer. Says cant display page or just stays a white screen. I can use the internet fine, if I type in an address directly. I run XP, and CA Security Suite that is anti spy/spam and virus protection. I have run all updates and scanned an it says no threats. can anyone tell me what to try next?
