Security – WiFi /Lans

by alotalota . Updated 24 years, 1 month ago

I have read some interesting articles about hackers using Lans and WiFi systems to access the internet. Also at a recent wireless tech seminar I learned that many radio towers are used to track assets in company work areas. A couple of ideas came to mind: 1 – how secure are radio towers used in LANs? 2 – can radio towers be geocoded and used to network with local and community GIS systems?

The second question is of more interest to me. URISA – Urban and Regional Information Systems Association, a non-profit which helps communities and business improve information systems, espeically in the area of GIS, urisa.org, has developed awards for applications the development of IT and GIS systems. I checked their web page for specific articles on geo-codeing radio towers for use with urban/regional GIS. I found a very interesting article on a Canadian utility which did this with great success.

Now the first part of the question, how to make sensitive information secure on such systems while allowing access to a networked system by others outside the system. Any ideas? Any ready solutions?

Thanks
