Server Side Includes HELP!!!

Right i have just started to add server side includes to my website, using the virtual tag ( ) i have added a couple of menus and decided to test by uploading to a brinkster server. They didn’t work. They had the .shtm and another had a .htm extension and neither worked. I emailed brinkster they didn’t suggest much only what i knew so does anyone know. PLEASE
