sever abends w/ adaptec 29160 ham driver

I have a client with a Compaq Proliant 1600. Recently I went to upgrade the tape backup and removed an older adaptec scsi adapter and replaced it with an adaptec 29160. whenever the ham driver is loaded the server eventually abends with a cpu hog server 02 process. I have upgraded all firmware and have service pack 8a installed. all applicable compaq patches are installed and I am using the latest adpt160.ham driver. I have used NWASPI 2.0 and later versions. I have positioned the driver to be loaded in all possible places in the startup.ncf. I have swapped out cards, turned off the bios load. the only thing attached to the card is the tape drive. The abend occurs with nothing attached to the card. WHAT ELSE CAN I DO?
