Shared Files get locked by MS Excel 2007

I am using MS Excel 2007 with files stored on a shared drive, However many times when I open a file it gets locked by me and others are not able to access it. Also some temporary files get created, Deleting them sometimes solves the problem, It only happens when I use the file others have no problem.
OS: Windows XP Professional
S/w: MS Excel 2007
