Sharepoint and forums – should i bother?

My company is about to re-launch the intranet using Microsoft sharepoint as its platform. I’ve done a little research and it seems like sharepoint is good at managing files and the communication stuff, but can you design a standard forum in sharepoint? The forum’s I’ve seen look nothing like a standard forum we’re all used to and the functionality looks a little thin too, are forums sharepoints Achilles heel?
