Slow processing speed

At home I currently have a Compaq Persario with 128mb of RAM, running home addition of XP. This machine seems extremely slow. My Windows 98 machine with less memory is a speed demon compared to this unit. Any ideas on how to speed it up if at all possible? I’m considering adding 512mb of additional memory. Will that help much?
