some video files are not playing .avi .mkv (2nd time)

I have many movies with extensions .avi .mkv etc. however few files among them which I had downloaded a while ago and already watched them are not playing now…I have tried Klite VLC, KMplayer and etc…installed xvid codecs. But no luck so far. kindly suggest me what and why they are not playing. thanks in advance.
