sound card problem after reloading 98SE

by wordmaster1 . Updated 21 years, 3 months ago

I have an Abit KT7A-RAID MB, two WD drives, 1 Maxtor, AMD MP2600 processor, latest Paltrudes modded bios for MB and RAID, SB Live 5.1 sound card.

This setup has been the same for 6 months to a year. Everything has been working fine, including the sound. The machine began having problems with CD drives, would open but would show empty with CD’s in them. After going through many different things, I finally reloaded 98SE.

After reloading, the drives work fine, but the SB Live 5.1 sound card is not found, even running the “find new hardware” app. Instead, I have something called Creative EMU10K1 Audio Processor (WDM) showing in device manager. Apparently Creative’s generic audio.

The “Creative Multimedia Interface” has the yellow exclamation mark and updating drives does no good whatsoever. Resources show “no conflict”.

I have removed these devices and 98 has found them when booting with the same results. I have also uninstalled all Creative drivers. When trying to re-install the 5.1 drivers, I got an error message that no 5.1 card was found. I had to install the Live (not 5.1) drivers to get the audio to work at all then it showed the Creative EMU10K1 Audio Processor (WDM) instead of my sound card. The audio will work, but not with the enhancements of the 5.1 card.

So far, everything else I have tried seems to work with the new 98 reload. BTW, I did not format, just reloaded. I have run Norton WinDoctor and a couple of other such programs with no good news. I have also run a virus check (AVG) and Spybot S&D and Adaware. All clean.

I have googled this problem and tried every fix I could find. Hopefully one of the experts on this board has the knowledge to tell me how to fix this problem.
