I have a strange problem with particular .jpg files on a few of our workstations. Here’s the scenario: An outside company generates .jpg images and sends them to several people in our company (in a single e-mail, so everybody gets the same attachment). We all have similar computers running Windows XP, same service pack, running the same programs. So there is very little variation.
My computer is one of them with the issue. While others in the company can open the attached .jpg just fine, when I try to open it, it either tells me the file is corrupt, that there’s no preview available, or it just displays a small box with a little red ‘X’ in it. I’ve tried opening directly from the e-mail message, I’ve tried saving the file to my PC and THEN opening it, but the result is the same every time.
Thinking maybe it’s a profile issue I logged onto a different PC (same OS, same programs) with my user account, opened Outlook and opened the .jpg from the e-mail message without any issue. On my original computer I can open any other .jpg files without issue, just not the ones from this particular company. Since it’s only from one company I can assume that maybe they’re doing something differently when saving the image, but that doesn’t explain why others can open them. I can’t figure out where or why it’s failing.
Programs I’ve tried to open the images in: Microsoft Office Picture Manage, Image and Fax Viewer, Paint, Internet Explorer, Gimp v2.6.
** One thing to note is that if I log onto a different computer, open the image there and then re-save it as a .jpg and send it back to my other computer, I can open it just fine.
