System Configuration Data Read Error (on Gateway laptop) – HELP!

by larrycunningham . Updated 14 years, 4 months ago

I have a Gateway M-1626 laptop and when I restarted it yesterday I got this following boot error message (am including all the text from the screen):
——————————————
Phoenix TrustedCore ™ NB

USB 2.0: WD Virtual CD 1110
Mouse initialized
System Configuration Data updated

System Configuration Data Read Error

I have tried to reload Windows from the OS CD (that I got with the laptop) but it fails related to this error (forget the exact message now). And I have tried to recovery everything using the Recovery CD that I made when I first got the laptop but I can’t get the laptop to recognize the Recovery CD either.

I chatted with Gateway customer service and they suggested I re-flash the BIOS (and gave me the file to download to do that) but this requires Windows to run!?!? Supposedly by making the USB drive that the re-flash utility is on the 1st boot drive it would start up and re-flash the BIOS .. but it didn’t .. it said there wasn’t a bootable system on the USB drive (and yes, I extracted the files on to the USB drive first).

Any suggestions on what I can do to get this problem resolved? Thanks.
