TCP/IP in W2K registry

by suttjef . Updated 23 years, 8 months ago

Hi all.
I get the ZDNetWeek – Tech Update, there is an article in this that says Win 2000 automatic TCP/IP settings aren’t always the best choice for network performance, and then goes on to give a list of tweaks to optimise the Registry!. I must admit that I am somewhat reluctant to mess with the registry, although I am pretty well versed with IT., but nevertheless this article is so interesting. It explains how to adjust the (MTU) packet size, saying that an incorrect MTU can make the network run very slowly and that Win2000 (in its standard form) is not optimised for a speedy network. It goes on to say that by typing (where?): PING -F -I [MTUsize][gateway] where MTUsize is the size you want to experiment with and gateway is the gatewayof your network, going on, it states that by using an MTU size of 1,454 and by doing so will make the command look like: PING -F -I 1454 147.100.100.50, Then once you have discovered an MTU value that works, you then embed the value into the Registry.
Question, although I would love to play around and try to increase the efficiency and speed of my network connection, I feel that I do not have the apptitude to try this out.
Is there anybody out there who knows enough about this subject, who iswilling to try and help me understand what I really have to do to try this?
Either, please email me or your comments on this site, any help would be really appreciated.
Jeff
