The Perfect PC – Drives and Storag

Hard Drive:
I like the IBM DeskStar, 7200 RPM drive. The 40GB drive is more than adequate for a client machine in a networked environment. For a stand-alone machine, I’d install the 75GB IBM DeskStar drive. I’ve been using this drive for several years, and have never had one fail. All in all they’ve performed quite well.

CD-Rom Drive:
I’ve always been satisfied with whatever drive seemed convenient at the time of purchase. I’ve never been very particular in this area. All of them work okay; some are probably more reliable and durable than others; and the read speed of the drive hasn’t really been a factor. (I’ve just been getting the “flavor of the month”.) However, I hate the ones that sound like a jet plane getting ready to take-off when reading a CD disk. What should one look for and consider when specifying a CD-Rom drive?

CDR and/or R/W:
I’ve bought only a few of these, all being the current Hewlett Packard model of the day. Any opinions?

Floppy Disk Drive:
Aren’t they all the same?

DVD:
I’ve never bought or used one. Any opinions?
