Thumbnail views disappearing

I have a couple of Win 2K machines that have thumbnail views enabled, put do not get the view when the folder opens. You have to click on the picture so it comes up in the little viewer. It Worked at one time and now it doesn’t. This only affects some folders not all. Why?!?!
