Trying to reinstall XP system but error

keeps coming up when I do saying I have a stack overflow. When going into config.sys to change them as instructed, it says there are too many parameters. My computer is an emachines. Can anyone please explain the steps I need to take in changing the stack number and parameters? Thank you so much
