Unable to access old XP drive using USB to SATA adapter in Win 8

My old XP box finally died, so I bought a shiny, new Dell XPS 8500. I bought a USB 2.0 to SATA drive adapter, connected it to the drive from my XP machine and it spun up fine. Unfortunately I can’t figure out how to access any files on the drive. I can see it using disk management, but is shows up as uninitialized. It seems like the drive is physically all right, but I can’t seem to access it using file explorer.

Anyone have any suggestions on how I might be able to get some files off the old drive?
