Unable to connect to DSL Modem.

I have the AT&T DSL service with a Broadxent 8012V modem. I used to get the internet directly through the modem until I got another computer. Now both my computers are connected through a Linksys BEFSR41v4 router. I used to connect directly to the modem but now I cannot. I do can connect through the router, but when connected directly to the modem it says the The Remote Access server is not responding.
